Excerpt from Viva Spartania
Vice-Colonel Dread. M.Y. 2117-2137

“Well, I’m out of here,” said Vice-Colonel Hippo, as he took one last look around. “You’ve seen the files, and you know where everything is, so carry on, Dread.”
“Yes Sir,” said the new replacement, a short woman whose most striking attribute was her waist-length dreadlocks.
Hippo smiled wryly, and shook his head as he left. “That’s one strange Spartan there,” he thought. “More geek than soldier.” “Can fight like hell, but doesn’t like to.” “She’s got guts, though, which is why Colonel Santiago put her here.” He’d heard the stories about her, how she could kill a mind worm boil single-handedly, and how she’d once calmly pulled a single mind worm out of her hair, then, held it to her face until the last minute, before ripping it two, and flinging it back into the fungus. “Yep,” said Hippo, aloud. “One strange Spartan, indeed….”

2117—Gave orders to send the Alien Artifact to Sparta Command. Scouts exploring North of Hero’s Waypoint reported seeing another Unity pod, but decided to wait before examining it.

2118—Scouts decided to check out the monolith near Hero’s Waypoint. It seems that they can repair worn equipment…

2119—“Mind worm boil just outside,” radioed Sgt. Casarez, from the tower at Hero’s Waypoint. “Got it,” said Dread, who quickly did away with the small boil. The colony pod was ready to go, but Dread decided to wait for an escort, which was on its way. “No use losing folks to the worms”, she thought. “And we’d better get working on a former too, because we need some decent roads around here, and I’m tired of that fungus.” She broke out of her reverie. “Come on, Laird,” she said, nodding at a pretty blonde. “Help me got those planetpearls while the worms are gone.”

2120—“We’re almost ready with the colony pod,” radioed Travis, from Sparta Command. “Give it a little bit.” “When its ready, send it East,” radioed Dread. “The scouts are saying that the high country over there is prime real estate.”

2121--“Repairs are finished here at the monolith,” radioed Sgt. Takahashi, the rover commander. “I’m going to head out with the folks and the colony pod.”

2122—The artifact arrived safely at Sparta Command, and a Unity pod Northwest of Sparta Command was found to contain energy resources.

2123—The colony pod at Sparta Command is ready, and has headed east, as ordered. Sparta Command is now working on a former, so that new roads and farms can be built.

2124—A new base, Hawk of Chiron, is founded! The citizens hold a small celebration, then, set about securing the base.

2125—Hawk of Chiron is secured, and they have decided to build a former so that a road can be built to connect Hawk of Chiron to Hero’s Waypoint, and Sparta Command.

2126—The former is ready at Hero’s Waypoint, and Dread asks the local contactors to began building a Recreation Commons. “After all”, she thought, “we’ve got to keep the folks happy.”

2127—Spartan State Radio announced that a new technology called Information Networks has been discovered, and that scientists are now working on something called Nonlinear Mathematics, which will allow us to build better and stronger weaponry. “Hate to break it to you,” said Dread to the contractors at Hero’s Waypoint. “But I want you to build a Network Node, instead of the Recreation Commons, and I want it to be done as quickly as humanly possible, so I’m going to allocate some funds towards this.” “When we’re finished, we can link that artifact to it, and download the files within, which give information on new technologies.” The contactors grumbled a bit, but Dread promised them that the rec. commons would be built as soon as the Node was finished.

2128—The colony pod from Sparta Command has almost arrived at its destination.

2129—Miriam is again on the LiveLink, which is broadcast throughout Spartania. She wants our files on Centauri Ecology in exchange for her maps. “Yeah”, Dread decides. “I want to know where she is, anyway.” Then, Miriam demands the files on our new tech, Information Networks. “You’d better skip down the Yellow Brick Road to Hades, old bat,” snapped Dread. “Do your own research!” “Well, wheedled Miriam, “Can we sign a Pact of Sisterhood?” “Sister who?” replied Dread. “No, honey, we don’t do pacts around here.” “Good day.” Miriam signed off grumbling something about friendship being a two way street, but Dread paid her no attention.

2130—The colony pod from Sparta Command has safely reached its destination.

2131—Spartan State Radio announced that the Gaians have discovered a new technology known as Secrets of the Human Brain, and that this discovery has stimulated more research. “Darn!” muttered Dread. “Oh, well…”
“I see some mind worms coming up kinda close,” radioed Sgt. Casarez again, from the tower at Hero’s Waypoint. “Yeah, I see,” replied Dread. “I’m going to tell Davis on the former to head back.” “I don’t want any casualties.”
Meanwhile, a new base, Militia Station, has been founded. There’s no time for celebrations, as some of Miriam’s troops are in the area, and it’s decided to secure the base first, and party later.

2132—Militia Station is secured, and the Mayor has decided to build a new colony pod, and send it south, hoping to stop Miriam’s lightening fast expansion.

2133—Hero’s Waypoint is attacked by mind worms, but the scout defends ably, and is promoted to Veteran. Dread gives him a new glock, and an Uzi as a reward.

2134—Construction of the road to Sparta Command has resumed.

2135—Work continues on the road to Sparta Command, and scouts continue to explore the area Northwest of Hawk of Chiron.

2136—The former is ready in Hawk of Chiron, and construction of the road to Hero’s Waypoint has begun.

2137--A new former is ready in Sparta Command, and construction of a road and farms leading to Militia Station has commenced. The contractors have begun work on a new rec. commons.

“Well,” thought Dread, as she began packing her things, and preparing for her new assignment. I haven’t done too badly around here, and it was actually kind of nice. She knew that she’d like this next assignment, because it involved working with mind worms…
