THE FOYER

Hi. Welcome to the foyer! This is the place where I tell you a little about myself, so let's begin.

First off, I'm Dread, and this is my house. I have a lot of plans for this little shack, but right now, it's somewhat bare. That will change soon, as I add pics, links, and other cool stuff.

Now, about me. I'm 40 years old and I live in Denver, Colorado, the Mile High City. I have been living here on and off for 14 years.

The neatest thing about Denver is that it is a Mecca for people with disabilities. Several years ago, Denver was voted the most accessible city in the U.S. by the President's Committee On Employment of Persons With Disabilities. Since I am a person with a disability, that is very important to me! Denver's transit system is 100% wheelchair lift equipped, and there are services available to folks with disabilities here that are not available in most states. That's why many folks with disabilities move here.

Denver is also the home of ADAPT, a national, grassroots organization that is at the forefront of the disability rights movement, and Atlantis Community, the second oldest Independent Living Center in the country. You'll find out more about these organizations as you tour my place.

Now, what else is there to tell about me? Well, I'm into music pretty deeply. My favorite genres are African and Reggae music. I also like Celtic and New Age music, as well as Andean music and a bit of Jazz.

I'm an avid reader, deeply into science fiction and science essays. I like the classics as well. I have a personal library of well over 1,000 books!

I'm also into coins as well, and I have been collecting them on a casual level for several years. I have many interesting old coins from around the world!

Computers are my thing, too. I have a degree in Computer Information Systems, and I often go around helping my friends with the simple things concerning their computers. I guess that makes me somewhat of a geek, eh?

I'm also an activist. Political and community activism is where my heart is. Call me what you want, warrior, troublemaker, militant, whatever, I gain intense satisfaction when I'm helping to make the world I live in a better place. I have been an activist for 25 years, working on a variety of human rights issues, and I have seen firsthand what happens when people get empowered and work together to create positive change.

On July 30, 2004, I moved to Washington, DC. I must say that it's a challenging, yet interesting place to live.  If you'd like to see some interesting spots in the District, check out my DC Links page.

On November 20, 2006, I moved to Rochester, NY, to take a position with the Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL) as a Systems Advocate. This is definitely exciting and rewarding work! An added bonus is that the Center for Disabilty Rights (CDR), which RCIL is affiliated with, is the home of the "Nation of Rochester", the Rochester chapter of NYS ADAPT! Check out CDR and RCIL.

Well, I hope you liked my foyer. It's kind of bare, but keep coming back to see the changes. Go Home, though, so that you can check out the rest of my house.
