Economist: Disabled have shown us the way
By
Michelle Loubon
Economist
Dennis Pantin, on Saturday, praised the disabled people "for
working
towards building democracy in T&T."
Led
by chairman of the T&T Chapter of Disabled People International George
Daniel,
several disabled people have been camping outside State-owned
National
Flour Mills' Wrightson Road compound, protesting that company's
lack
of policy on the hiring of disabled people. Today is the group's 78th
day
of protest.
The
disabled have also been agitating for the setting up of an
inter-Ministerial
committee to study and endorse proposals put forward by
the
disabled community on proper PTSC transport.
Pantin,
also a member of the Working Committee for Constitutional Reform,
said:
"The disabled have shamed us in their willingness. They have shown us
the
way to build democracy. If you have a problem you just don't sit in a
corner
and moan and lament. People must take responsibility."
He
was speaking at the annual Constitution Reform Forum meeting at the
Engineering
Faculty, UWI St Augustine.
Pantin
said CRF was proposing the creation of a Constitution Reform
Secretariat
and has also planned a march for Republic Day (September 24).
CRF
was also organising a youth forum for August 2003 to May 2004 with
emphasis
on research and training, he said.
