Day 4--Sunday, September 7, 2003.
We
continued through Delaware, climbing some really large and steep hills.
I was still having problems with controlling my electric chair, but to
be honest, after the day with the manual, I was glad that the electric
was working.
Look
at this HUGE hill that we just came down!
Some of my buddies from the March...

Tim
Wheat took this one of some of the Colorado crew at our camp. We spent
the night of day 4 in the parking lot and grass of the Area 2 Delaware
State Troopers Headquarters. Daniese McMullen-Powell, who is from Delaware,
and some of her family treated us to a whole roast pig with all the trimmings
for supper. The vegetarian fare was quite delicious, and was prepared by
Michelle Steger and her family. That night, some of the marchers were interviewed
live on a radio program called On A Roll. It is a national disability radio
show. After various folks includng Latonya, from Denver, finished their
interviews, all of the marchers were invited to do some loud ADAPT chants,
and we gleefully obliged!
Today was Ursula from Philly, and Kathleen Kleinman's birthdays. Kathleen and Roland drive the Big White Cloud. It's literally a city transit bus that they converted and made acessible. They pick up folks whose chairs have broken down.
I
spent most of the night chatting with Jo Ann, Tamar, Jon and Lopeti. Today was Jo Anne and her partner's anniversary. They've been together for over 20 years! Jo Ann was telling me how they were able to send gifts to each other with her being on the road. It seemed to me that after all this time, they were still deeply in love. Wow! Perhaps, one day, I'll be so fortunate. Tamar and
I have a lot in common, and have read many of the same obscure books. We
have also had some similar life experiences. This is Jon's first ADAPT
action, and he is amazed--and hooked! He says that he can't believe that
he's doing this, and that sometimes, he gets close to tears when he thinks
about what he is doing, and why. Lopeti follows the Rastafarian faith,
and his Rasta name is Levi. He hand-crafted me a Rastafarian tam,
called a crown. I really love this crown, and have worn and carried it
everywhere! He has also loaned me one of his Morgan Heritage CD's, and
I have been jamming to this for most of the March. I have found myself
hanging out a lot with Levi, because he is cool to be with!
For
most of the Denver crew, today marks one week that we have been away from
home. Dawn really misses David and Brooklyn. Linh is worried about her
apartment. My spirits and mood are like a roller coaster--up and down.
This March is HARD, but I know that I'll make it.
