Anita Cameron

                                                                   ADAPT Organizer

My name is Anita Cameron, and I am an organizer for ADAPT. I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, but have lived in many parts of the United States, and in Canada as well. I like to read, and to listen to music from around the world. I also love computers, cats, and chess. I have a degree in Biology from University of Illinois at Chicago, and a degree in Computer Information Systems.

I have 21 years of experience in working for social change, and have worked with numerous social justice organizations and movements. At 16, I joined the Peace and Justice movement. I worked with several local organizations whose focus included women’s issues, issues of homelessness, and concerns about nuclear proliferation and world peace. I gave talks, wrote letters, attended meetings, and participated in protests.

My first act of civil disobedience was at age 17, when I joined an antinuclear protest and was one of several people arrested for trespassing. I later became deeply involved in the Gay and Lesbian rights movement, and helped to push for Chicago’s anti-discrimination ordinance, which passed on December 9, 1988. I have worked with Gay and Lesbian organizations in a number of cities, including Colorado Springs, Philadelphia, and Denver. I was the national representative for people with disabilities for the 1993 March On Washington.

In 1986, while still in Chicago, I joined ADAPT. ADAPT is a national, grassroots disability rights organization with chapters in 49 states. I have been with ADAPT for 16 years, and have organized in Chicago, IL, Colorado Springs, CO, Denver, CO, Philadelphia, PA, and Washington, DC. My ADAPT experience has been the most rewarding, as I have seen firsthand what grassroots organizing and direct action can accomplish. I have always wanted to help make the world a better place, and by working with ADAPT, I am helping to do just that.
